You’re not alone, and we’re here to tell you how.

When you paste a YouTube or Vimeo link in Apple Pages, it appears as a large, clickable thumbnail that you can play right in the document. This feature is actually pretty neat, but only if you want a video amid your text. Otherwise, not knowing how to get rid of it is kind of annoying—plus, you just never know how it’s going to look if you need to convert it to a Word document.

To make it so the videos you place in the document show up as a link instead, all you need to do is go to Pages in the top left corner, select Preferences, and beside Adding Media, uncheck Paste YouTube and Vimeo links as web videos.

Now, when you paste a link, it will appear as text instead.

As you’ll see in the example, if you want to include a combination of thumbnails and links, you can also switch the setting on and off as you work. Keep in mind, you can also save your reader time by linking to specific parts of a YouTube video if you do want to use this feature.

Alternatively, you can place the link directly in your text by highlighting words you want, right-clicking the selection, and choosing Add Link. The video won’t appear with this option.

Sometimes Less Is More

Adding media is an excellent way to support your work, however, sometimes it’s not always necessary or appropriate. You can also end up with a really busy document if you have a lot to share.

Thankfully, when you switch off the paste as video feature in Apple Pages, you still have the option to include some thumbnails if you want. Now that you know how to fix this, it’s time to get back to your document.
